My vision of photography
A special moment, a moving light, a scene from life, a feeling that brings something to life - these are the motivations that drive me to take a photograph. A cliché is nothing more than a "photo-graphy", i.e. the writing on a support of a light that will never be reproduced again, a unique situation.
The images thus generated are then elaborated into a photographic creation whose ambition is to enable the purchaser of the work to relive the emotions I experienced myself at the time of shooting.
My working tool is a full-format (24 x 36) digital camera (Nikon D850); all my shots are taken in raw format. This means that the camera records all the information it can (colors, tones, details, contrasts). I avoid all automatic settings at the moment of shooting, except in situations where it is technically impossible to control all parameters manually (e.g. wildlife photography).
It's only afterwards that the photographic creation really takes shape: starting from the 'raw' shot, I shape the work as if I were taking the shot a second time. The enormous wealth of information contained in the raw shot enables me to reveal the 'digital negative'. The software I use is Camera Raw, a Photoshop module whose sole purpose is to develop digital negatives (i.e. not to 'photoshop' the photograph).
In the late 70s, I learned to develop negatives in the darkroom. In digital photography, I develop the (digital) negative using software (instead of a darkroom). In this way, I'm not locked into the choices the camera would have made had it been set to jpeg (compressed format). So, as long as the shot is in focus and bright enough, I can give free rein to my interpretation.
This way of working gives me the immense joy of seeing a work of art, a photographic creation, born before my eyes, which I hope will arouse the same emotions in you.
Photographic printing
My photographic creations can be printed in 2 ways:
- on CHROMALUXE,
- on DIBOND.
CHROMALUXE PRINTING
ChromaLuxe consists of an aluminum plate on which the various layers of color making up the work are printed directly (without paper), thanks to a process of 'sublimation' (passage from a solid state to a gaseous one) of special pigments. This process is carried out at a temperature of 200°C.
The ChromaLuxe printing process has been around for many years, and in my opinion represents the 'pinnacle' of photographic printing. The brilliance and contrast levels are absolutely breathtaking. What's more, ChromaLuxe offers many advantages in terms of durability. A ChromaLuxe print can therefore be hung almost anywhere.
DIBOND PRINTING
The Dibond print consists of a sheet of high-quality photo paper laminated to a Dibond panel (layers of PVC and aluminum 'sandwiched' together). The two major advantages of a Dibond print (on paper) are :
- the perfect flatness of the photographic paper, enabling the work to be presented in all its splendor;
- printing on high-quality photographic paper reveals every nuance of color, tone and contrast.
Since Dibond prints are made on paper (and not aluminum), this type of print will obviously require greater care.
